Reflective Practice Is the Key to Improvement
As certified Pilates instructors, we spend a lot of time planning classes, choosing exercises, and supporting our clients. But one of the most powerful tools for improving your teaching doesn’t come from choreography or equipment, it comes from reflection.
What is reflective practice?
Reflective practice simply means taking time to pause after teaching, notice what happened in class, and think about how you can adapt or grow. It’s about becoming curious about your own teaching and your clients’ responses.
Whether you're training to become a certified Pilates instructor or have been teaching for years, reflection is a vital habit.
Notice how clients respond through body language, comments, and movement patterns
Plan effective progressions and regressions for each individual
Build confidence in your teaching voice over time
Create a habit of continuous improvement that supports your certification journey and beyond

A free tool for certified Pilates Instructors to get you started
To make reflection easy and practical, Pilates Training Hub have created a Mindful Teaching Worksheet: Use this space to capture your thoughts, notice patterns, and plan your next steps as a confident, thoughtful Pilates teacher.
The worksheet guides you through simple but powerful questions, such as:
What went well today?
What feedback did I gather from clients?
How can I adapt exercises to suit each participant’s needs?
What will I do differently next time?
By jotting down quick notes after each class, you’ll start to see patterns, track your progress, and feel more assured in your teaching decisions. Skills that will serve you well.
Looking ahead
Reflective practice also lays the foundation for continuing professional development. As you deepen your teaching, it will become an invaluable skill when exploring specialist workshops and advanced training. I’ll soon be introducing additional training opportunities, beginning with a Small Ball Workshop. To keep in the loop with the latest news make sure you have signed up to our newsletter.
Whether you’re newly qualified or already a certified Pilates instructor, reflection is a habit that keeps your teaching fresh, responsive, and rewarding.
