How to Become a Reformer Pilates Instructor in the Uk
Reformer Pilates is everywhere right now - How to Become a Reformer Pilates Instructor in the Uk
Studios are opening across the UK, classes are filling up, and for existing Pilates instructors, adding Reformer to your skillset can open up a whole new range of teaching opportunities.
But if you're thinking about becoming a Reformer Pilates instructor, you might also have noticed that the qualification route hasn't always been particularly clear.
The good news is that Reformer instructor training in the UK is becoming more standardised, with clearer recognised qualification pathways now available.
And personally, I think that's a really positive step for the Pilates industry

Do you need a qualification to teach Reformer Pilates?
If you want to build a professional career teaching Reformer Pilates, good-quality training matters.
Knowing how to perform Reformer exercises yourself is very different from knowing how to teach them safely and effectively to another person.
As an instructor, you need to be able to observe movement, understand anatomy, select appropriate exercises, programme sessions, give clear instructions, adapt exercises and recognise when something isn't suitable for the person standing in front of you.
Then there's the apparatus itself. You need to understand spring choices, equipment set-up, transitions, safety and how changing the Reformer set-up can completely change the demands of an exercise.
A weekend spent learning a repertoire of Reformer exercises is not the same thing as developing the skills required to teach people well.
Do I need to qualify in Mat Pilates before Reformer?
For the new Active IQ Reformer Pilates qualification, yes.
Learners wishing to undertake the qualification must already have achieved a suitable Level 3 qualification in Instructing Pilates Matwork. And I think this is a really positive move.
Reformer may look very different from Matwork, but the equipment doesn't replace the foundations of good Pilates teaching. Your Matwork training is where you develop your understanding of anatomy and physiology, the principles of Pilates, programming, observation, communication, cueing, exercise adaptation and working safely with different participants.
You learn how to teach Pilates, not simply how to perform a collection of exercises.
Reformer training can then build upon those foundations and teach you how to apply them to the apparatus.
I'm not Pilates qualified yet – where do I start?
If you're starting from scratch and your eventual goal is to teach Reformer Pilates, Matwork is your first step.
A suitable Level 3 Pilates Matwork qualification gives you the foundations you need as a Pilates instructor before progressing onto Reformer training. The Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork is designed to give learners the professional skills and knowledge required to design, plan and deliver safe and effective Pilates classes.
At Pilates Training Hub, we already deliver the Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork, so if you're completely new to teaching, this is where your training journey can begin.
Once qualified in Matwork, you can gain teaching experience and continue developing your knowledge before adding Reformer to your qualifications.
I'm already a qualified Mat Pilates instructor – what's next?
If you already hold a suitable Level 3 qualification in Instructing Pilates Matwork, Reformer can be a natural next step in your development.
For many instructors, it can also significantly broaden where and how you can work.
Active IQ identifies Pilates studio Reformer instructor as an employment progression from its Reformer qualification. That might mean working within an established Reformer studio, combining Mat and Reformer teaching, or eventually developing your own Pilates offering.
And because you already have your Matwork foundations, your Reformer training can concentrate on developing your skills specifically around teaching on the apparatus.
Why clearer Reformer qualifications are good for the Pilates industry
Reformer Pilates has experienced enormous growth and growth is exciting. More people discovering Pilates, more studios opening and more opportunities for instructors are all fantastic things for our industry.
But rapid growth also creates demand for instructors.
That's why I welcome clearer, recognised training pathways for people who want to teach Reformer.
A beautiful studio and a room full of expensive Reformers don't automatically equal good Pilates.
The instructor still matters. Our understanding of movement matters. Our ability to observe the person in front of us matters. Our cueing matters. Our programming matters. And knowing when to progress, regress or completely change an exercise matters.
The Reformer is an incredible piece of equipment.
But ultimately, it's the instructor who teaches the person – not the machine.
What should you look for in Reformer Pilates teacher training?
Don't choose your Reformer training based solely on how quickly you can get a certificate.
Look at what you're actually going to learn.
Good Reformer teacher training should help you understand the equipment rather than simply memorise exercises. You should leave feeling confident with equipment set-up and safety, spring selection, exercise purpose, teaching and cueing, observation, modifications and progressions, programming and working with real people.
And, importantly, you should have opportunities to practise teaching.
There is a big difference between being able to perform an exercise beautifully yourself and being able to look across a studio, recognise that someone is struggling and know what to do about it.
That's the skill we're ultimately trying to develop.
Can I train in both Mat and Reformer Pilates?
Absolutely – and I think we're going to see more instructors following this pathway.
Rather than viewing Mat and Reformer as competing versions of Pilates, think of them as different tools within your teaching career.
Matwork gives you an incredibly strong teaching foundation.
Reformer then allows you to expand your repertoire, your understanding and the environments in which you can work.
Your training pathway could therefore look something like:
Level 3 Pilates Matwork qualification → gain teaching experience → Reformer Pilates qualification → continue developing through experience and CPD
And your learning doesn't suddenly stop because you've collected another certificate.
The best instructors continue learning throughout their careers.
